An elective in the Professional Program in Solar Energy and Green Building

Gain a comprehensive understanding of the solar technology industry. Review the basics of solar, electric, and thermal technologies; industry economics and dynamics; policy drivers; utility structure; and careers and business opportunities. Focusing on the California market, you learn about various factors that shape how, where, and how fast solar technology is being deployed and how to pursue a career in the solar industry. Investigate barriers and enablers in meeting California's solar energy goals, and examine utility industry structure and regulation, as well as the integrated relationship between energy efficiency and solar technology.

Examples of innovative solar business models and national trends are explored, as well as the policies relying on solar to address climate change. Examination of utility industry structure and regulation, and the integrated relationship between energy efficiency and solar technology is included. Through slideshow lecture, video, guest speakers, group exercises, spot exams, and a final project, students will explore basic concepts of solar technology, policy, economics, and industry dynamics.

This course provides the participants with an intense review of the California solar energy industry. If you've ever been curious about working in energy conservation either efficiency or solar, or you’re in the industry and you'd like a broad review of the current trends and economics influencing the California energy marketplace, this course is for you!

This course is for professionals, entrepreneurs, non-profit agencies, students and individuals interested in understanding the solar industry, either to pursue a career or develop a business in solar, or to more effectively advocate for pro-solar policies. The course is also of great value to current agency staff or solar professionals needing a holistic understanding of the industry. In addition to a "general interest" and career-exploration audience, the course is also of great value to government staff and solar industry professionals wanting a broader perspective and strategic advantage in their current position.

Prerequisites: A basic understanding of Excel software is recommended.
